This arrangement of the familiar hymn adds a counter-melody paired with the original. It was premiered by the Southwest Minnesota State University Men’s Glee Club and sung by several smaller groups, including an octet from the Glee Club at the funeral of Minnesota poet Bill Holm.
The text is by Thomas Dorsey – the gospel musician, not the bandleader Tommey Dorsey of the same era. He wrote new lyrics for the old hymn-tune “Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone” as he was grieving for his wife and newborn child. One hears the voice of the weary, grieving soul as well as the hope of the dying who stands “at the river”.
I have a limited number of copies available due to copyright restrictions. If you’re interested and can find me, I’m happy to provide a reasonable number for free (until stock runs out).
